WATERFRONT PAINTERS
On the trail of Nolde, Kirchner and the expressionists
A documentary journey into the picturesque landscape of northern Germany in search of the motifs which the “Bridge” artists portrayed in their paintings. The North Sea and the Baltic Sea very much shaped the way Emil Nolde`s world famous artist group painted. This 45-minute documentary “Painters at the Waterfront” relates to the viewer not only the fascination of the landscape, but also of how nature – difficult to imagine today – was experienced as a world opposed to ours. A world that was against bourgeoisie stiffness, Prussian values and militarism. Never again did landscape play such an important role in German art.
