|Whether it’s a big supermarket or the corner shop: statistically, Germans go grocery shopping three times a week. The supermarkets make billions, it’s all about revenue. Every week, they lure customers into buying their products. Marketing strategists monitor every step we take inside the store, what products we take out of the shelves and which ones we look at. Nothing remains unseen and apparently, it’s successful: two thirds of the things we have in our bags when we leave the store were not on our shopping list. Of course, these marketing strategies are not illegal. But their goal is to manipulate costumers and make them spend more money.
“Stern TV” uses a candid camera to find out how customers are seduced to buy more than they want in shops. Armin Valet of the Consumer Advice Center Hamburg offers his expertise and explains the marketing tricks.
