STARI MOST
Bridge of Hope
Mostar was considered as one of the most beautiful and cosmopolitan cities of former Yugoslavia. Its main attraction was “Stari Most” – the old bridge which gave the city its name. A bridge between orient and occident which symbolised the peaceful cohabitation of various ethnic groups.
Mostar today, ten years after the civil war – an oppressed and still divided city. In the midst of all the ruins are the remains of the old bridge. This masterpiece of Ottoman architecture resisted wars and tragedies for more than four centuries. Within less than half an hour, the World Heritage Site was destroyed by Croatian grenades on November 9, 1993. UNESCO and the World Bank have provided 4 Million Euros to finance the exact reconstruction of the bridge. But there is a lack of most things in Mostar. The economic situation is bleak. The young post-war generation doesn`t have dreams of fashion or fast cars, but instead of Schengen-Visas. They are sceptical of the reconstruction of the old bridge as the city is still divided – and other problems appear more pressing. Is there any chance that Stari Most can bring opposing parties back together again? An exciting cinematic production goes in search of an answer. |
