A HOSPITAL FOR THE LORD OF THE SKY
A hospital in the middle of the desert, equipped with the best you can get for your money – an X-ray-room, an operating theatre, an emergency ambulance and a laboratory. The medical team consists of specialists from all over the world. The patients, however, are not humans, but birds.
18 years ago, the “Royal Falcon Hospital” was founded in Dubai and has been fully financed by his highness Sheik Hamdan ever since. The hunting falcons of the Sheik, his family and friends are treated here exclusively and free of charge, amounting to 3,000 birds a year. The breeding of falcons has a long tradition in the Arab world. Today, owning a falcon is both a status symbol and an expensive hobby. Keeping a falcon is not easy, but it is even more difficult to breed these incredibly swift hunters. This 52-minute documentary takes a look behind the scenes of the falcon hospital. It shows the people who play an important role in the big business surrounding these birds of prey who all have one thing in common – a deep respect and a special affinity to the falcon, the lord of the sky. |
